Keep Weeds and Pesky Pests at Bay

As the days grow warmer, weeds and pests increase so keep weeding, create an environment that attracts the beneficial insects, and apply insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

The Oregon Garden Resort has opened 45 minutes southeast of Portland in Silverton, Oregon.

The new 103-room Craftsman-style hotel is located adjacent to the Oregon Garden and guests of the resort enjoy complimentary access to its 80 acres, with its 20 themed gardens, including a Children’s Garden, Pet-Friendly Garden, Rediscovery Forest, Recycled Water Wetlands and more. The Silverton Market Garden is also one of the gardens and, each August, September and October donates its produce to the Silverton Area Community Aid Food Bank.

Not only are there gardens surrounding the resort, but the resort is showing its emphasis on farm-to-table cuisine with the hiring Jeff Nizlek as the chief for its Restaurant at the Oregon Garden Resort. Nizlek has a built-in network of local farmers, growers and winemakers from the surrounding Willamette Valley, including his wife Naomi’s small organic farm from his previous work as the executive chef at the Bistro at Wellspring in Woodburn and, before that, was the chef and owner of the Silver Grille in downtown Silverton.

A special spa garden will be an important part of the resort’s Moonstone spa, which utilizes herbs grown there to create poultices, which can help reduce aches and pains, stimulate circulation, increase lymphatic drainage and detoxify and condition the skin. The Oregon Garden Resort has an introductory package for just $69 Sundays through Thursdays. The package includes one night’s accommodations for two, dinner for two, a bottle of house wine and an American-style breakfast, as well as admission to the Oregon Garden. This offer is valid through December 8.

The new Oregon Garden Resort is part of Moonstone Hotel Properties, a group of boutique garden-themed inns in California and Oregon. For more information on Moonstone, visit http://moonstonehotels.com/
